Magdeburg Remembers Victims One Year After Christmas Market Attack

Magdeburg has marked the one-year anniversary of an attack on its Christmas market, remembering the six people killed and over 300 injured. A memorial service was held at the Johanniskirche for those affected and their families, attended by Sachsen-Anhalt’s Prime Minister Haseloff and Magdeburg’s Mayor Borris. Federal Chancellor Merz was scheduled to deliver a speech. Earlier, Bishop Feige led an ecumenical service, emphasizing acts of charity amidst the tragedy, with testimonies from a survivor, an emergency chaplain, and a trauma surgeon. Citizens were invited to form a chain of lights around the Alter Markt. Federal President Steinmeier used an online platform to call for remembrance of the victims and their relatives. The perpetrator, a doctor from Saudi Arabia, drove a car into the market on December 20 last year. He has been on trial since mid-November, with investigators noting his alleged ties to Islamophobic and right-wing groups, conspiracy theories, and psychological issues.
