In a recent interview with Deutschlandfunk, Mendel highlighted the decreasing number of Holocaust survivors able to share their experiences, coinciding with a rise in antisemitic and right-wing extremist attacks on memorial sites. He noted that many young people lack knowledge of Germany’s Nazi past, often influenced by distorted narratives prevalent on social media. Mendel urged that the digital space must not be ceded to extremist groups, particularly in light of recent incidents linked to pro-Palestinian sentiments following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
