MEPs Support Tariff Reductions on US Goods Amid Trade Agreement Negotiations
نقلاً عن [Press release – MEPs back the lowering of tariffs on US agricultural and industrial products]
News Brief: The International Trade Committee of the European Parliament has approved proposals to eliminate most tariffs on US agricultural and industrial products, emphasizing conditions for implementation.
On Thursday, the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament voted in favor of two legislative proposals aimed at reducing tariffs on US goods, with a vote tally of 29 in favor, 9 against, and 1 abstention. Rapporteur Bernd Lange (S&D, DE) highlighted the importance of a robust framework that includes a suspension clause to halt tariff preferences if new US tariffs are imposed. Additionally, a sunrise clause stipulates that tariff reductions will only take effect once the US meets its commitments under the Turnberry trade deal. The proposals also address tariffs on EU products containing steel, aiming to lower tariffs from 50% to 15%. The full Parliament is set to vote on these proposals on March 26, before negotiations with EU governments commence. This initiative follows the political agreement reached in July 2025 regarding tariff and trade issues between the EU and US.
