Metall Employers Demand €50 Billion Savings Package from German Government
German metal employers, led by Gesamtmetall’s Zander, have called for a substantial savings package from Finance Minister Klingbeil, proposing cuts of up to €50 billion.
Zander emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of all government expenditures, excluding defense, targeting funding programs for municipalities and NGOs, as well as personnel costs. He suggested the elimination of hundreds of civil service positions and a reduction of up to 10,000 jobs at the Federal Employment Agency. The proposed savings are intended to finance tax relief measures, including adjustments to corporate tax, income tax, and the solidarity surcharge, along with a delayed implementation of the top income tax rate.
