According to the IOM, four out of ten deaths were linked to maritime journeys, where many individuals drowned or boats disappeared without a trace. Additional fatalities were reported in West Africa along routes to Europe, as well as in Myanmar and neighboring countries, where hundreds of Rohingya refugees lost their lives while fleeing persecution.
