Online shoppers in the EU will now face additional customs fees on low-cost imports from non-EU countries.

Starting today, new EU customs rules impose a minimum fee of €3 on all imported goods from non-EU countries, even for low-cost items under €150. Previously, such items were exempt from customs duties. For example, a package containing three T-shirts valued at €30 will now incur a €3 customs fee, and adding another item like a toy will increase the fee to €6.

Experts warn that these costs are likely to be passed on to consumers, particularly for low-priced goods. The European Consumer Centre Germany advises buyers to check if customs fees are included in the price before purchasing from non-EU sellers. Additionally, consumers may face import VAT and service fees from courier companies. The EU aims to curb the influx of cheap imports, but critics argue that the burden will fall heavily on consumers.
