News Brief: The Niedersachsen government has agreed to provide additional funding for the digitalization of schools, significantly increasing support for municipalities. This initiative aims to enhance educational equity and modernize learning environments.

Niedersachsen’s state government, comprising the SPD and Greens, has reached an agreement to allocate more funds for the digitalization of schools, as announced by the Ministry of Education. Key elements of the plan include a permanent commitment from the state to supply digital devices for students and teachers, a subsidy of 125 euros for each newly purchased device, and an increase in annual contributions for IT administration from 11 million to 23.5 million euros. Starting in 2028, state contributions will also be adjusted according to public service wage developments. This initiative coincides with the introduction of loan tablets for all seventh-grade students and teachers. Minister-President Olaf Lies emphasized the importance of equitable access to education, while Education Minister Julia Willie Hamburg hailed the agreement as a significant milestone for educational justice. Municipal associations praised the decision, highlighting its long-term legal security for digital device provision.
