Pharmacy Reform Aims to Improve Healthcare Services in Germany

The German federal cabinet has approved a pharmacy reform law designed to enhance healthcare delivery across the country. Under this legislation, pharmacists will be authorized to administer a wider range of vaccinations, including those against tetanus. Additionally, pharmacies will be permitted to dispense certain prescription medications without a doctor’s prescription, particularly for uncomplicated acute illnesses.

To support rural healthcare provision, the reform introduces subsidies for partial emergency services offered by pharmacies in less accessible regions. Meanwhile, the Federal Association of German Pharmacists has called for a nationwide protest action, emphasizing the urgent need to increase pharmacy remuneration to halt the ongoing decline of pharmacies.

This law aims to expand the role of pharmacies in healthcare, addressing both service accessibility and economic challenges faced by the pharmacy sector in Germany.
