Preventing Extremism and Violent Extremism Online: Strategies for a Safer Future

    Strategic Policy Paper

Today’s world has witnessed rapid technological advancements and increased online connectedness and engagement. While these developments have bolstered the global economy and created opportunities for new connections, learning, and innovation, this accessibility and expanded reach have also been exploited by malicious actors. Through its program titled “Understanding & Preventing Extremism Online in Southeast Asia,” funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Hedayah launched two qualitative research studies to support future online counter-extremism activities in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Each report presents findings from field research on the current media and information landscape, focusing on the strategies and tactics employed by online extremist or violent extremist actors, the challenges faced by frontline practitioners and policymakers in responding to these issues, and insights gained from existing responses and emerging opportunities for preventing and countering online extremism. These reports further offer practical, context-specific recommendations for practitioners and policymakers working to identify and disrupt extremist activity online, build resilience against extremist narratives, and strengthen local and national responses.

Each country report is available in both English and Bahasa.
