Russia Declares Deutsche Welle an ‘Undesirable Organization’, Tightening Media Restrictions
The Russian government has further escalated its crackdown on Deutsche Welle, officially designating the international broadcaster as an “undesirable organization.” This move, prompted by a request from the Russian parliament, makes any cooperation with Deutsche Welle punishable by fines or imprisonment. Even sharing its content on social media is prohibited, affecting especially Russian staff and citizens both inside and outside Russia.
Deutsche Welle’s director, Peter Limbourg, affirmed the organization’s commitment to independent reporting despite Moscow’s censorship efforts. The broadcaster continues to reach more Russians than before via its Russian-language services, covering topics like the Ukraine conflict and issues rarely reported in state media. Since 2022, Deutsche Welle has been banned from operating within Russia and now broadcasts from Riga, Latvia, while still providing access to its news via various social media channels.
This latest designation intensifies the restrictions on independent journalism and highlights the Kremlin’s resistance to press freedom and unbiased information within Russia.
