Farmers across Germany are grappling with significant crop losses after an unusually hot and dry summer, with some regions experiencing near-total harvest failures.

An exceptionally dry and scorching summer has caused widespread agricultural challenges across Germany, with farmers reporting drastically reduced yields. The southern and western regions have been hit hardest, where prolonged heatwaves and a lack of rainfall have led to extreme stress on crops. In some areas, sporadic thunderstorms provided slight relief, but the overall harvest remains well below expectations.

Thomas Domin, a farmer in eastern Germany, described the uneven impact of the weather, noting that rainfall varied significantly even between neighboring villages. While his grain harvest suffered from the June drought, he managed to grow sufficient feed for his livestock, sparing him additional expenses. However, declining grain prices and rising costs for essentials like fuel and fertilizers have left many farmers in a precarious financial position.

The situation is even more dire in the southwest, where some farmers are referring to their region as the ‘Sahel zone of Germany.’ Weeks of relentless heat exceeding 30 degrees Celsius have led to catastrophic harvest failures, particularly for winter rapeseed, which saw a 20% drop in yield due to drought and pest infestations. With the national grain harvest down 7% compared to last year, questions loom over the long-term viability of many farms as they face mounting economic pressures.
