Significant Increase in Forest Fires in Germany in 2025
Germany experienced a dramatic rise in forest fires in 2025, with over 1,175 incidents reported.
Approximately 2,626 hectares of forest were burned last year, equivalent to about 3,676 soccer fields, more than double the number of fires compared to the previous year due to an exceptionally dry spring.
The major fire in Gohrischheide, Saxony, in early July accounted for around 1,867 hectares burned, while nearly 20% of fires are suspected to be arson, with over a quarter caused by negligence from campers and visitors.
