The US Supreme Court has rejected Donald Trump’s attempt to redefine birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

In a landmark decision, the US Supreme Court has ruled against former President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship, a policy enshrined in the 14th Amendment since 1868. The ruling preserves the principle that anyone born on US soil is automatically a citizen, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) hailed the decision, stating, ‘No matter who your parents are, if you’re born here, you belong here.’

Trump had called the policy ‘a disgrace,’ with Vice President JD Vance labeling it ‘the dumbest immigration policy in the world.’ Experts warn that while the legal status remains unchanged, the debate has made citizenship more precarious. Kim Lane Scheppele, a Princeton professor, noted, ‘Citizenship is under attack in many ways under Trump,’ citing efforts like the Justice Department’s denaturalization office and proposed voter ID requirements. The Migration Policy Institute estimates that 255,000 children born annually to noncitizen parents could have been affected by the proposed changes.
