This Government Has Little Chance Against the Kickl-ization of Politics

A recent Market study for STANDARD paints a troubling picture of the country’s mood, showing that more than a third of respondents want Herbert Kickl as Chancellor, while only one in ten would choose the incumbent Christian Stocker.

The coalition government of ÖVP, SPÖ, and Neos receives a harsh assessment after nearly ten months in office, with citizens complaining about little action, lack of reform courage, and unresolved problems.

Nevertheless, this government has achieved more than its predecessor due to better cooperation among parties, though deep challenges such as health reform, education, and federalism remain significant obstacles.

Past reforms, like the merging of health insurance funds under the previous government, have often proven to be empty promises.

Some argue that Stocker’s unpopularity is less about his personality and more about the hostile rhetoric spread daily by Kickl and amplified by social media and tabloids, which has influenced public perception and led many to believe the government is failing.

While one need not love this government, the political discourse should not succumb to the poisonous influence of Kickl.
