The General Secretary of the Central Association of German Crafts, Schwannecke, emphasized the essential role of the craft industry in society’s safety and supply, including infrastructure and food services. He advocated for the possibility of young people performing civil service within craft businesses to gain practical experience and take on early responsibilities.

This call comes as the German government has recently held discussions with social organizations about reintroducing civil service options. In early December, the Bundestag approved a new voluntary military service system, but if recruitment targets are not met, a partial conscription could be implemented. In such cases, a mandatory alternative service for conscientious objectors would also be necessary.
