Unstaffed Signal Boxes Cause Daily Train Cancellations; Route Normalization Months Away
Daily train cancellations in parts of Germany are caused by unstaffed signal boxes, leading to significant disruptions and delays. The Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) criticizes these structural problems, emphasizing that such issues deter people from using trains and hinder the transition to more sustainable transportation. While evening service restrictions near Frankfurt-Höchst and between Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and Bad Vilbel ended on November 17, other routes continue to face cancellations due to unstaffed signal boxes. Between Hanau Hauptbahnhof and Hanau Nord, no nighttime trains run currently, with improvements only expected by March 2026. Weekend services on the Nidda–Gießen line remain limited, and several recent signal box failures have forced cancellations and rerouting of trains. Some lines, like S3, S4, and S5, have mostly resumed normal operations, though restrictions persist on RB15 and RB16 lines until at least February 22, 2026. The VCD calls for urgent action to resolve staffing shortages that have caused these disruptions.
