News Brief: The Trump administration’s proposal to reduce U.S. steel tariffs may sway the European Parliament in favor of a transatlantic trade deal. This development follows a call between U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and EU Trade Committee Chair Bernd Lange.
BRUSSELS — The Trump administration has assured the European Union’s top trade lawmaker of plans to reduce the list of steel items subject to high U.S. tariffs. This concession could influence the European Parliament’s support for last year’s transatlantic trade deal. The offer was made during a call between U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Bernd Lange, chair of the European Parliament’s Trade Committee. As a result, Lange’s fellow socialists have shown increased support, allowing a crucial committee vote to proceed on Thursday. However, final decisions regarding the scheduling of a plenary vote on the agreement, reached at President Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf club in Scotland last July, are still pending.
