Wadephul: Ukraine Talks in Berlin More Serious Than Ever

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed optimism about the ongoing Ukraine peace talks in Berlin, stating that the consultations were being conducted more earnestly than ever before. He highlighted that the Europeans play a crucial role in efforts to achieve a peaceful resolution. Reports suggest that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may be willing to drop his country’s bid to join NATO, which could be a potential offer acceptable to Russia.

Zelenskyy has indicated a preference for security guarantees from Europe and the U.S. over NATO membership, as the latter is not supported by all alliance members. While the NATO accession goal is currently part of Ukraine’s constitution, Russia demands that Ukraine not join the alliance. Meanwhile, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee Laschet cautioned against Ukraine conceding territorial claims in the Donbass, emphasizing its strategic importance. The negotiations are ongoing, with several EU leaders expected to join discussions in Berlin.
