The Pius Brothers, founded by Marcel Lefebvre, represent a persistent challenge to the Vatican’s modernizing efforts.

Marcel Lefebvre, who passed away in 1991, is the defining figure of the Pius Brothers, officially known as the Society of Saint Pius X, established in 1970 in Switzerland. Their name reflects a commitment to the traditional values upheld by Pope Pius X, who introduced the Anti-Modernist Oath in 1910, which all aspiring clergy had to take until 1967.

The Pius Brothers emerged in the wake of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), which aimed to modernize the Catholic Church. Lefebvre vehemently opposed the Council’s achievements, viewing secular human rights and democracy as threats to the Church’s authority. Today, the Pius Brothers maintain a significant following in France, with over a third of their 733 priests being French, alongside connections to far-right politics.
