DWD Preliminary Annual Report: 2025 Among Warmest and Sunniest, No New Records

    Reported from the source

Quick summary: The German Weather Service (DWD) has released its preliminary annual report, indicating that 2025 was one of the warmest and sunniest years since records began, though no new all-time records were set for temperature, precipitation, or sunshine duration. The year was characterized by “very warm, sunny, and low in precipitation” conditions, with an average temperature of 10.1 degrees Celsius and significantly less rainfall than average.

According to the preliminary balance from the German Weather Service (DWD), based on data from approximately 2,000 measuring stations, the year 2025 was “very warm, sunny, and low in precipitation.” While no new records were established for temperature, precipitation, or sunshine duration, the year ranked among the warmest and sunniest since recordings began. The average temperature for 2025 was 10.1 degrees Celsius, which is 1.9 degrees above the internationally recognized reference period of 1961-1990 and 0.8 degrees above the 1991-2020 comparison period. This places 2025 among the ten warmest years since records started in 1881. Precipitation for the year is estimated at 655 liters per square meter, marking a 17 percent decrease compared to the average of both reference periods. The DWD therefore described the year as “significantly too dry.” Conversely, 2025 is set to be recorded as one of the five sunniest years since 1951. With over 1,945 hours of sunshine, the duration was approximately 26 percent above the 1961-1990 average and about 17 percent above the more recent 1991-2020 reference period. A new sunshine record was narrowly missed, with July and October ultimately dampening the overall balance. Meteorological observations also noted extreme heat in early July, while September, particularly in the west, experienced very wet conditions. The winter period, however, was notably mild and sunny.
