Early Statin Use Linked to Reduced Dementia Risk in Type 2 Diabetes Patients

A recent study presented at ESC Congress 2026 indicates that initiating statin therapy shortly after a type 2 diabetes diagnosis may significantly lower the risk of developing dementia, highlighting the importance of timely cholesterol management in this patient population.

A study presented at the ESC Congress 2026 and published in The Lancet Regional Health – Europe has found that early initiation of statins following a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is associated with a reduced risk of dementia. As the global population ages, the prevalence of dementia is expected to rise, underscoring the need for effective preventive strategies. The Lancet Commission suggests that nearly half of dementia cases could potentially be prevented by addressing 14 key risk factors, including high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Dr. Tummas Ternhamar from Copenhagen University Hospital, who presented the findings, emphasized the significance of managing LDL-C levels, particularly in individuals with type 2 diabetes, who often experience elevated cholesterol and are at an increased risk for cognitive decline. The study aimed to determine whether early statin treatment could mitigate this risk. Researchers analyzed data from Danish registers, identifying 132,585 individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes between 2006 and 2019. They employed a clone-censor-weight design to assess dementia incidence among patients who either did not initiate statin therapy, began treatment within one year, or started between one and five years post-diagnosis. Over a median follow-up of 7.1 years, 2.7% of participants developed dementia. The results indicated that early statin initiation was linked to a 15% lower relative risk of dementia over ten years compared to no treatment, while late initiation correlated with a 10% reduction. These findings were consistent across genders. Professor Isabel Goncalves, a member of the ESC Communication Committee, noted the potential implications of these results, advocating for timely statin treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes to not only manage cardiovascular risks but also potentially reduce dementia risk. However, she cautioned that further research is necessary to establish a causal relationship. Prepared and Edited by AboMatrix
