Gas station operators in Germany are expressing concerns about renewed aggression from customers as fuel prices climb following the end of the government’s fuel rebate. Steven Gröbler, a gas station operator in Berlin, recalls the hostility he and his staff faced during previous price hikes, with customers venting their anger at employees. Gröbler shared instances of verbal abuse and even physical confrontations, saying, ‘All my employees have been authorized to issue bans if necessary.’

Herbert Rabl, spokesperson for the Gas Station Operators Association, confirmed widespread reports of aggressive behavior during earlier price surges. He emphasized that customers often misunderstand the pricing structure, blaming operators instead of oil companies or tax policies. While the rebate temporarily eased tensions, operators remain financially strained, relying heavily on shop sales and additional services like car washes to sustain their businesses. Gröbler noted a 37% drop in shop revenue during the crisis, highlighting the precarious position of many operators.
