German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has voiced confidence ahead of coalition discussions on a reform package designed to strengthen the country’s economic competitiveness, ease burdens on private households, and encourage industrial investment. Speaking after a cabinet meeting at the Ministry of Defense in Berlin, Merz stated, ‘My expectation is that we will truly make a major leap forward in modernizing our country.’

Merz outlined key goals of the reform, including reducing bureaucracy, modernizing state structures, advancing digitalization, and addressing tax and labor market issues. He emphasized the importance of enabling private households to consume and industries to invest. While optimistic about progress, Merz clarified that the process would not yield immediate, sweeping changes, stating, ‘There is no single big bang. This is a process we are accelerating.’ Coalition leaders from CDU, CSU, and SPD are set to meet, with results expected to be shared by Thursday.
