Gelsenkirchen Safe-Deposit Vault Heist: Thousands of Boxes Breached, Losses Estimated in the Tens of Millions

    GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany — Dec. 31, 2025

German police are investigating a major vault break-in at a local savings bank branch in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany, after thieves breached the basement vault and broke into several thousand safe-deposit boxes, in what could become one of the country’s largest such cases in recent years.

Authorities and multiple media reports say the perpetrators exploited the Christmas holiday lull to gain access to the restricted area and open a large number of customer boxes, typically used to store jewelry, documents, gold and cash. The incident was discovered early Monday, Dec. 29, after a fire alarm prompted emergency responders to enter the building.

Investigation focuses on access route and getaway car

Investigators believe the suspects used a nearby parking facility as part of their access route. Witnesses reported seeing men carrying large bags in or near the garage over the weekend. Reports also cited surveillance indications involving a black Audi RS6, allegedly used as a getaway vehicle, with plates linked to a vehicle reported stolen in Hanover.

Police have launched a dedicated investigative effort, reviewing footage and urging anyone with relevant information to come forward. No arrests had been announced by year’s end, and authorities cautioned that the full scope of the losses is still being assessed.

Bank tells customers to assume they are affected

Sparkasse Gelsenkirchen set up a public information page for customers, warning that the likelihood a box was breached is very high and that affected clients will be notified in writing. The bank said the contents of each box are insured up to €10,300, and encouraged customers to check whether their household insurance (Hausratversicherung) provides additional coverage.

Customers seeking compensation are being asked to compile an inventory list and provide documentation of value where possible. The bank also noted that cash is not excluded under the policy conditions. Due to extensive structural damage, customers will not be allowed to enter the safe-deposit area until further notice, while hotline channels are provided for urgent cases.

A broader shift in bank crime

The case underscores a continuing shift away from “classic” branch robberies toward attacks on value-storage infrastructure—vault rooms and safe-deposit systems—where potential returns can be higher and direct confrontation lower. The final loss figure will depend on the ongoing police investigation and on customers’ inventory declarations and proof of ownership.

What affected customers should do (quick checklist)

Create a detailed inventory list of what was stored.

Gather receipts, photos, appraisals or other proof of value.

Review Hausratversicherung for possible top-up coverage.

Follow the bank’s written updates and hotline guidance; do not attempt to access restricted areas.
