Italy has refused to accept the return of migrants from Germany under EU rules, citing fairness concerns and demanding compensation for migrants brought to its shores by German rescue ships.

The Italian government has firmly declined Germany’s request to transfer migrants back to Italy under the Dublin Regulation. Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi emphasized that Italy would only accept migrants who arrived in Germany after the implementation of the Common European Asylum System (GEAS) on June 12. This decision was formally communicated to Berlin following discussions between Piantedosi and German officials.

Italy has also raised concerns about the disproportionate burden it faces due to migrants rescued by German humanitarian ships in the Mediterranean. Piantedosi revealed that over 2,200 migrants have been brought to Italian ports by German rescue vessels this year, with 500 arriving since GEAS took effect. He argued that Germany should provide financial compensation to Italy for handling these arrivals, highlighting the strain on Italy’s resources and infrastructure.

In addition to rejecting migrant transfers, Italy has implemented stricter border controls with Spain following a surge in arrivals in the Spanish exclave of Ceuta. These measures have led to several arrests and deportations, underscoring Italy’s focus on national security. Piantedosi clarified that these actions are not hostile but aim to ensure fairness and protect Italy’s interests amid ongoing migration challenges.
