Hussam Abu Safiya, a prominent Palestinian physician from the Gaza Strip, has been detained in Israel for almost 20 months without formal charges. His case has ignited a fierce debate, with some labeling him a terrorist linked to Hamas, while others view him as a hero who risked his life to save others during the Gaza conflict. Abu Safiya’s family, now residing in Kazakhstan, is actively campaigning for his release. Elias described a recent visit from Abu Safiya’s attorney, who reported severe injuries and signs of mistreatment, including physical abuse by prison guards.

The attorney, Nasser Odeh, noted that during his visit, Abu Safiya appeared unrecognizable due to fresh injuries on his head and face. He reported that Abu Safiya is being denied adequate medical care and has suffered targeted punishment following a court appearance regarding his detention.
