Preventing Extremism and Violent Extremism Online: Insights and Practical Solutions

    Strategic Policy Paper

The modern world has witnessed rapid technological advancements and increasing online connectedness and engagement. While this has significantly grown the global economy and fostered new connections, learning, and innovation, it has also led to the exploitation of this openness and accessibility by malicious actors. As part of its ‘Understanding and Preventing Extremism Online in Southeast Asia’ program, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Hedayah launched two qualitative research studies aimed at supporting future online counter-extremism activities in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Each report presents findings from field research on the current media and information landscape, highlighting the strategies and tactics used by online extremist or violent extremist actors, the challenges faced by frontline practitioners and policymakers, and lessons learned from existing responses as well as emerging opportunities for prevention and countering online extremism. In addition, these reports provide practical and context-specific recommendations for practitioners and policymakers working to identify and disrupt extremist activities online, build resilience against extremist narratives, and enhance local and national responses.

Each country report is available in both English and Bahasa, ensuring accessibility for local users and increasing the effectiveness of targeted counter-extremism programs.
