The electric arc furnace, with a tapping weight of 285 metric tons and an annual capacity of up to 2.5 million metric tons, is set to begin construction in August 2026 and be commissioned by 2029. Funded by €200 million from the German federal government and North Rhine-Westphalia, the project aims to enhance energy efficiency through Tenova’s Consteel® technology, which facilitates continuous scrap charging and utilizes waste heat for preheating. This initiative is pivotal for the decarbonization of Germany’s steel industry and reinforces Salzgitter’s commitment to sustainable steel production.
