Spain and Portugal have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly procure high-mobility tactical military vehicles, VAMTAC, with European funding.
The Spanish Ministry of Defense announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Spain and Portugal for the joint acquisition of VAMTAC military vehicles, which can carry up to 1,500 kilograms. This initiative, facilitated by the European ‘Security Action for Europe’ (SAFE) program, aims to enhance military cooperation and interoperability between the two nations. Defense Minister Margarita Robles emphasized that this agreement not only strengthens bilateral ties but also contributes to a unified European defense policy. The signing took place at the historic Fortress of San Juan Bautista in Oporto, with Robles and Portuguese Defense Minister Nuno Melo in attendance. The collaboration is expected to bolster the European defense industry and promote a comprehensive tactical mobility capability, reinforcing the strategic integration of both countries’ armed forces within the European framework.
