German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier congratulated US President Donald Trump on the 250th anniversary of the United States, emphasizing the significance of NATO.

In a congratulatory letter, Steinmeier underscored the strong ties between Germany and the US, stating that their shared history is deeply meaningful to Germans. He highlighted NATO’s role in defending not just security, but the ideals of freedom, justice, and self-determination.

Steinmeier recalled how German contributions helped build the American Republic and noted that Germany’s path to democracy in the 20th century was unimaginable without US support. He also referenced Ronald Reagan’s historic call to tear down the Berlin Wall, asserting that both the new beginning in freedom and German reunification were inconceivable without the US.
