The U.S. Supreme Court has struck down Donald Trump’s attempt to limit birthright citizenship, citing constitutional protections.

In a landmark decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled 6-3 against former President Donald Trump’s executive order seeking to restrict birthright citizenship. The court declared the order unconstitutional, reaffirming that all children born on U.S. soil are citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status, as guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. The only exception remains children of diplomats.

Trump’s order attempted to limit citizenship to children whose parents held permanent residency in the U.S., citing concerns over ‘birth tourism’ and national security. However, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., writing for the majority, emphasized that the Constitution’s language is clear: birthright citizenship applies to all individuals born in the U.S. under its jurisdiction. The ruling underscores America’s adherence to the principle of jus soli, a practice shared by around 30 countries, including Canada and many in South America.
