Child Welfare Endangerments in Germany Reach New Record High
The Federal Statistical Office of Germany reported that youth welfare offices recorded nearly 73,000 cases of child welfare endangerments last year. This represents an increase of almost one-third within five years. Over half of the cases involved signs of neglect. In about one-third, there were indications of psychological abuse. Physical abuse and sexual violence affected minors to a similar extent. Approximately half of the children at risk were younger than nine years old.
This significant rise in reported cases highlights ongoing challenges in protecting children from various forms of harm. Authorities continue to monitor and address different types of maltreatment to improve child welfare outcomes in Germany. The data was broadcast on December 15, 2025, by Deutschlandfunk.
